The Art of Fashion. The age of dreams and revolutions. 1789 – 1968
From 18 March to 2 July 2023, at the Civic Museum of San Domenico, Forlì, Italy, a surprising exhibition entitled “The Art of Fashion. The age of dreams and revolutions. 1789 – 1968”, dedicated to the fascinating relationship between art and fashion in the period from the Ancien Régime to the second half of the twentieth century: 300 works including paintings, sculptures, period and contemporary clothing. A unique opportunity to contemplate masterpieces by Boccioni, Boldini, Canova, Fontana, Hayez, Matisse, Mondrian, Friedrich and many others, in dialogue with the creations of all the greatest fashion designers.
The “The art of fashion” exhibition, conceived and promoted by the Cassa di Risparmio di Forlì Foundation, and curated by Cristina Acidini, Enrico Colle, Fabiana Giacomotti and Fernando Mazzocca, tells us how the “stage clothes” of our history have changed and how they have always interpreted the dynamics and roles of society. Before the invention of the cinematograph, paintings and sculptures framed historical moments, giving them eternity, while through the clothes, or the characters portrayed wearing them, it is possible to investigate society. The dialogue between art and fashion represents the evolution of society: fashion as a synonym of luxury and seduction, innovation and conformity; art as inspiration, expression and dissemination of models and behaviours.
