From 16 June 2020 to 4 October 2020 “The power of drawing” Masterpieces from the Prat Collection – Paris

After the period of lockdown, museums in Paris reopened their doors on 16 June 2020. One of the first museums to reopen was the Petit Palais, Museum of Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris, with the inauguration of the exhibition entitled La force du Dessin. The exhibition was open to visitors until 4 October 2020.

Started in the 1970 by Louis-Antoine and Véronique Prat, the Prat Collection has become one of the most prestigious private collections of illustrations in the world and the first to be exhibited in an exhibition at the Louvre in 1995. In 2020 the Petit Palais decided to organise a new and expanded presentation of this collection at the opening of the Salon du dessin, an event that brings together all French and international art enthusiasts.

The Prat Collection focuses on the French school before 1900 and provides a particularly representative overview of three centuries of French art, from Callot to Seurat. The two collectors have always favoured works of art that are significant landmarks in art history and some of the most famous pieces are closely associated with the genesis of seminal works in French painting: the decorations of Versailles by Le Brun, Coypel or La Fosse, Pain d’Andromache by David, Songe d’Ossian by Ingres or Famille Belleli by Degas. The works of art by Poussin, Watteau, Prud’hon, Delacroix, Gros, Millet, Redon, Cézanne or Toulouse-Lautrec are some of the most important in this collection. The collection also includes masterpieces by artists who were once unknown, but who are gradually finding their place in art history, such as La Hyre, Restout, Vincent, Peyron, Girodet, Doré or Gustave Moreau.
