Les Arpenteurs d’exhibitions.
The main goal of the association Les Arpenteurs d’exhibitions is to assign the CatalPa Award to the catalogues of the exhibitions of the City of Paris museums, that stand out in the opinion of the members of the jury. The jury is composed of experts (specialists) who belong to the world of art and culture and enhances the most deserving catalogues in this prestigious publishing industry. By doing so, the jury attempts to attract the attention of the press, the public, professionals, students and researchers. Thanks to their special and demanding viewpoint, Les Arpenteurs d’exhibitions aims to promote this editorial genre by offering their insights to the public, publishers, the media and official institutions. Their association supports and encourages an impartial and meticulous approach to this impressive multitude of catalogues. They are authentic books of art and knowledge that accompany, or – better still – prolong the existence of cultural events, which sometimes are so evocative, but ultimately ephemeral.

Victor Brauner

Victor Brauner was born in Romania and he personally experienced the artistic ferment of Budapest during the 1920s, years of the avant-garde – expressionism, constructivism, Dadaism – whose radicalism so closely matched his independent spirit. From 1925 onwards, regular stays in Paris, where he would settle definitively in 1933, saw his painting gradually shift towards Surrealism. In 1933 he joined the movement and continued to take part in its activities until his exclusion by André Breton in 1948. Unable to emigrate to the United States when the war broke out, he had no choice – as a Jew, an undocumented foreigner and opponent of all forms of fascist and totalitarian oppression – but to go illegally underground in the south of France, where he devoted himself to the esoteric doctrines of tarot, alchemy, spiritism and the kabbala. In this dream world where reality no longer prevailed, his work took on a mystery all on its own. Paradoxically, this period of fear and total misery was also a period of great technical inventiveness, characterized by his use of wax and salvaged materials and by formal innovation.

MAM, Musée d’art moderne de la ville de Paris.

Paris Musées.
