South Sudan. One of the largest humanitarian crises documented by photographer Fabio Bucciarelli. Published by Dario Cimorelli Editore, printed by Tecnostampa Loreto, Italy.

CAMERA, the Italian Center for Photography based in Turin, hosted the presentation of the book South Sudan, in May. The Identity of the World’s Youngest Country by Fabio Bucciarelli – photographer, journalist and author known for having documented important global conflicts and crises – in dialogue with Andrea Tinterri.

Published by Dario Cimorelli Editore, the book collects the photographs taken by Bucciarelli between 2012 and 2022 in South Sudan, one of the countries most affected by the major humanitarian crises that have occurred in Africa. Theater of continuous civil wars, the youngest country in the world – its constitution dates back only to 2011 – has millions of displaced people and millions more Sudanese live as refugees in neighboring countries.
Through images of great visual and emotional impact, the book documents the lives of men and women, elderly and children who face the challenges posed by a nation under construction, by climate change, by war, offering us a reflection on the terrible humanitarian costs that these conflicts they involve but also precious moments of joy and beauty.

South Sudan has been plagued by political violence and instability since its independence from Sudan in 2011. It is now experiencing massive flooding for the fourth consecutive year. Since 2019, unprecedented rainy seasons have submerged much of the country’s landscape. Heavy rains and floods swept away people’s homes, properties, crops, livestock, schools and health centers and caused extensive infrastructure damage to roads and bridges. The climate crisis is bringing further challenges to this already vulnerable country.
With his reportage, made in South Sudan, entitled Loss and Damage, Fabio Bucciarelli is among the winners of the Sony World Photography Awards 2023, for the Professionals category, whose publication of the volume, in which the photographs of the winners are published every year , has been entrusted to Tecnostampa of Loreto (Italy) since 2015.
